The Fourteen Commandments of E-Mail
- You shall include a clear and specific subject line.
- You shall edit any quoted text down to the minimum you need.
- You shall always the sooner get to the point.
- You shall value briefness in others as in yourself.
- You shall read your message thrice before you send it.
- You shall ponder how the recipient might react to your message.
- You shall check your spelling and your grammar.
- You shall not curse, flame, spam or use ALL CAPITALS.
- You shall not forward any chain letter.
- You shall not use e-mail for any illegal or unethical purpose.
- You shall not rely on the privacy of e-mail, especially from work.
- When in doubt, save your message overnight and reread it in the light of the dawn.
- The Golden Rule of E-Mail: Don’t send to others the messages which are hateful to receive.
- The Supreme Sin (if violated): You shall never reply to a lengthy message by sending it back in its integrality and only answering “I agree”.
