Last August 17-19 (Friday night to Sunday morning), GK Cebu held the 8th Gawad Kalinga Builders Camp at GK Amazing Village in Budlaan. And I’m happy to say that though it was a chance for the people to chill and enjoy the long weekend at the mall or the beach or wherever, they chose to spend it the GK way. Read on to know what happened. :)
On Friday night was the introduction and grouping of participants. There were only two groups formed that night — Team Infinity and Team KaSuMiJo. Both teams painted their flags/banners and were asked to explain.

In fairness, their explanations were char. Hehe. After the activities, the campers were then asked to pair and were assigned to a Kapitbahayan who would be their host family for the duration of the camp.
Some time this month, a Mormon friend invited me and another friend for a visit to their temple. Out of curiosity, we accepted his invitation.

My first impression of the place (even before I was able to set foot on their grounds) was that it’s very peaceful and paradise-like. And I wasn’t disappointed when we went there last August 16 after work.
Since it was a Thursday, there was a scheduled tour around the place for visitors but we didn’t join them since we had our own tour guide (hehe).

As many of you may already know, I am a volunteer for Gawad Kalinga at the weekends, helping out on their various projects. If you are thinking of volunteering yourself for any project, charity or community work, then here are just a few of the benefits which doing so can offer.
Firstly, volunteering can be a great way to get out and about and meet new people. If you spend the majority of your day sat in the office, and tend to watch TV or play CheekyBingo during the evenings, then you might not have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends on a regular basis. However, if you choose to spend your weekends volunteering, you are sure to encounter plenty of social benefits. You’ll be working alongside people from all walks of life, many of whom you may otherwise never have met.
You’ll also have the opportunity to make a difference within your local community. Volunteering can be an extremely rewarding experience, and you can look forward to using your skills to help others. If, for example, you are great at gardening, this might not necessarily be something which you are able to use on a daily basis within your full time employment. However, it could be something which proves to be extremely useful within your local community.
In addition to putting your existing skills to good use, you can also expect to learn a few new ones, too! You might learn how to organize a fund-raising campaign, or you might simply be able to develop your confidence in working with others. Volunteering can offer a great range of opportunities, which you may even find help you in achieving your own career goals or other life achievements. There really are plenty of reasons to get involved as a volunteer as soon as possible!
On the morning of August 11, 2012, Mumu, some friends, and I joined Old School Meets New School, an open photowalk for photography enthusiasts. We roamed the streets of Cebu City and, in my case (and maybe for others’, too), took some random shots. Here are some of them:

I uploaded the complete album on my Facebook account. ;)
Here’s what was up with the group over the long weekend:

Here, you see the faces of the ‘drunkards’ (not literal) ready for the upcoming war:
