Computer Literacy Program
April 24-25, 2010 — it was another weekend worth remembering!
Exactly a year ago (April 25, 2009), I spent my time with the Cebu Bloggers Society when we invaded Max’s and Starbucks. This year, I still spent my time with CBS, but this time, for an outreach activity.
The Computer Literacy Program was initiated by Tsinelas Association, Inc. together with the Cebu Bloggers Society, Inc.
Fourteen CBS volunteers went to Lut-od High School in Pinamungajan, Cebu to teach select students about the basics of computer.
We spent the morning of the first day getting to know each other (students and volunteers) and having an orientation of what’s gonna happen. In the afternoon, we started the classes.
Jorich, Clado, and Miong introduced the computer and its parts, then Guada, Zyza, and Wilhelmina discussed the desktop fundamentals.
The other volunteers also helped in teaching and assisting the students in using the computers. At the end of the day, we all felt tired but happy.
We found repose in the Hidden Valley Mountain Resort.
It was such a beautiful place that we enjoyed our overnight stay — swimming, talking, laughing, and just everything!
The next day, we went back to the school to continue the classes.
Melith and Lemski discussed the basics of programs, files, and folders.
AJ, Reynold, Mark, and I then tackled about the internet basics.
It was a challenge because the school doesn’t have an internet connection, so we just relied on our visual aids. Nevertheless, we tried our best to let the students absorb our topic.
Me talking about e-mail and instant messaging.
I was the last discusser. The evaluation, which was a moving exam, took place after the students were given time to review their notes.
It felt so good looking at them like that.
The moving exam.
When it was all done, their scores in the attendance, oral participation, and written exam were compiled for their final score. The top 3 students were then determined and given the prizes.
We gave them a chance to spill their emotions and say what they want to say — what they like and dislike. It made my heart (and the others’) swell when they said they liked all of us and everything we’ve done, and that there was nothing that they didn’t like.
Jacki, one of the outstanding students, was the one who made my eyes well with tears because of her heartfelt message to all of us. And I’m sure the other CBS volunteers almost cried, too!
It was a very heartwarming experience.
There’s nothing that made us feel so light more than seeing the smiles of the students and hearing their appreciations.
Guys, we’ll be back soon. See you!
