Visual and Aural Pleasures

Written on December 6, 2009 by Mikyu.

Before November ended, I had a chance to delight my senses of sight and hearing. :yes2: For the former, I was able to witness the beauty of digital design. :sparkle: And for the latter, music did its part. :notes: (I decided not to make separate entries… just because. )

:download: Visual: A Digital Design Conference (November 28, 2009)

I actually didn’t buy the ticket. It just so happened that Clado had another appointment that day, so he gave me his ticket without letting me pay. Hahaha. :P I considered it a birthday gift, so, thanks Master! :gift2:

Visual is an 8-hour conference (SM Cinema 1) promoting the colorful and dynamic medium of digital design. The speakers were 9 of the top local graphic designers/artists of our region. These 9 home-grown talents shared to us their stories, processes, and exceptional works that made each of them “one of the few brightest minds in the industry”.

Speakers for the conference ▼

Christopher Colinares – Pursuing Your Career & Photography

At the age of 26, he made a bold career move shifting from administrative work to digital photography. Now as one of Cebu’s top wedding photographers, his expertise and unique experience make up an interesting topic to students and young professionals that pursuing one’s “desired career” is never an issue.

Genesis Rana – Print Commercial & Branding

Genesis talked about his commercial print works and branding, backed with his experiences working for advertising agencies outside the Philippines when he was still 18 years old. He is currently a partner and the creative director of a design agency.

Glenn Lomon – Web Design & Interface

Glenn is one of the best web designers in the country. He is currently working as a full-time offsite design/interface guy for an agency in the US. He is practically one of the few people in Cebu who can design digital interfaces for just about anything visual.

Kristy Anne Ligones – Shirt & Apparel Design

KDLIG, as she is fondly called by her friends, is a winner of Threadless. Representing the women side of design, she shared her award-winning works in shirt design and illustration.

Leo Guevarra – Graphic Design

Leo is one of the design pioneers in Cebu. He holds two bachelor degrees but chose to be a designer. His works have already been an inspiration to young local designers. His cutting edge style made him a finalist in Adobe International Digital Imaging Competition last 2002.

Nicolo Nimor – Shirt & Apparel Design

Practically one of the famous names in the international arena of apparel and shirt design, Nicolo is a perennial winner of every shirt design contest one could think of. At the young age of 21, he already had his own clothing line, Nick Automatic.

Niel Quisaba – Digital Illustration

Niel’s body of work ranges from illustration to cartoon design. He also does illustrations for magazines, designs snowboards and conceptualizes colorful cute characters. His works have been featured in Computer Arts and other respected digital illustration magazines.

Pierre Famador – Digital Matte Painting & Character Design

Pierre is a fine arts graduate with a lot of passion for both traditional and digital painting. He started his career in digital design as a cartoon animator before he fell in love with matte painting. He’s an all-around guy endowed with varied skills that he even designs and manufactured giant puppets in his spare time.

Wilmer Olano – Local Web Business & Strategy

Wilmer started his web design/development firm in 2004, practically doing every imaginable role for the company to run. In spite of the economic crisis, he managed to land projects with local companies and government agencies. Wilmer shared about his success in running a local web business shop.

My favorites among the speakers were Niel Quisaba, KDLIG, and Nicolo Nimor simply because I find their art very amazing!

I could describe Niel Quisaba’s art as out-of-this-world and futuristic. :sparkle4: And oh how I love the colors of most of his designs — the red-&-black combination! :heartspark: Here’s one of my favorites from his portfolio (he kind of gave us an overview of how he did this thing):

Middle of Nowhere. :peace:

For KDLIG’s art, I could say it’s pretty much detailed… and somewhat scary. Hahaha. :sweatdrop: My favorites:

Dead Sucker. It’s her winning design for Threadless. Click pic to enlarge. :smile2:

My Awesome Mixtape. It’s actually designed for an Italian band of the same name. I like the design not only because it’s a rad one, but also because it has the word mixtape on it. Hehehe. Click pic to enlarge. :smile2:

And lastly, Nicolo Nimor’s art was not as detailed as KDLIG’s, but nevertheless, it’s still cool! Here’s the design that I actually found amusing:

A shirt design for one of my favorite bands, New Found Glory. And My Friends Over You is also one of my favorite songs of NFG. :music:

Oh by the way, with me in the conference were CBS friends Sinjin, Prince, Iggy, and Jorich (not on the pic). :)

:download: Passionata: A Cultural Heritage Celebration (November 30, 2009)

Again, I didn’t buy a ticket as I’m just a poor student. Muhahaha. :sweatdrop: Evanjohnn gave free tickets to 10 bloggers, and I was fortunate enough to be one of them. ;p This concert, held at SM Cinema 1 still, was not only held to showcase great Cebuano talents, but also to benefit the Arts Council of Cebu Foundation. The main performers of this concert were the Asian Troubadours, the Cebu Chamber Singers, and the Mandaue Children’s Choir. :notes:

What’s great about the concert was that everything was live — no prerecording or whatsoever! And that made me appreciate it even more! Being sick that day didn’t stop me from getting goose bumps. That’s just how my body reacts in face of fantastic things. =D
