NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2009

Written on October 13, 2009 by Mikyu.

Handa ka na bang sumikat?
Huwag nang magtago! Magparamdam na kayo!

October 10, 2009, Saturday — NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2009, the country’s most anticipated inter-collegiate band competition, chose three of the best Visayas-based college bands who performed at the Piazza Area of Parkmall. These lucky young artists automatically advanced to the Finals stage of the competition where they will experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that includes head-to-toe makeovers, one-on-one mentoring sessions with some of the country’s top bands, intensive music workshops, and performances alongside their band idols on the Grand Finals Night on November 14 at the Ninoy Aquino Sports Stadium in Metro Manila. :notes:

The Cebu Bloggers Society attended the event as press/media. :camera: :camcorder: The event started with a lively number from the Knapsack Dancers. I think everybody would agree with me that they lacked coordination/synchronization. But they actually did great! I was focusing on the two front girls the whole time. They were the attention catchers. Hahaha. =D

The Knapsack Dancers

Joey and Phoebe, the emcees of the event, then introduced the judges for the competition: Mr. Vic Valenciano of Sony Music, Ryan Sarmiento and Ney Dimaculangan of 6cyclemind, Ms. Yayin Bangcoro of Nestlé Philippines, Inc., and DJ Kelly of KillerBee 92.3. :kyaa:

Then the battle began! :notes: Here’s the list of the competitors along with my trivial comments about them (mostly about the vocalists because they’re always the ones who catch my attention first). :sweatdrop: And pardon the amateur “music review” on some. Hihihi. :hihihi: Click on the band names for the pics. :camera:

Open list ▼

:music: Green Peace (STI – Tacloban) – At first look on the vocalist, you could already say that the genre of their music is reggae. Bob Marley, is that you? Hahaha. And almost the whole time, he was swaying like crazy! Yay!

:music: Spoonplay (Eastern Visayas State University) – It was their band that was practicing or testing the instruments before the event started, and I loved listening to what they played! Rad drum and guitar plays there. Their vocalist is female with a kinda powerful voice. And yes, it’s rock.

:music: Black Mantra (Cebu Institute of Technology) – Though they didn’t have much stage presence and they had some minor flaws in their performance, I still liked them just because of the solid voice of the vocalist! Bwahahaha! He sounded like David Cook (though I’m not much of a DC fan). :kyaa4:

:music: Squared Box (AMA Computer College) – Hmmm, nothing much I can say. Hihihi. Aw it’s also because I wasn’t able to see their whole performance. I was at Bo’s Coffee to attend to something for a while. Ooops.

:music: Bripny SKWR (Datamex Institute of Computer Technology, Tacloban) – The vocalist was like a worm because of his moves. Nyahehehe. Anyway, what we’ve noticed is that his actions were literal interpretations of the songs he sang. :sweatdrop2:

:music: Final Warnings (Aklan State University) – Female vocalist with also a kinda powerful voice. I think she likes Paramore. Hehehe. :x

:music: Frannie (Asian Development Foundation College, Tacloban) – Still female vocalist. This time, she’s not the rocker-type chick. =)

:music: Aesthetics (Aklan State University – CIT) – I didn’t like their performance much because the vocalist was expressionless. He could hit the high notes, but I couldn’t say he did well because his face doesn’t show it. =|

:music: Melted Eyes (Leyte Colleges) – I was amazed by the vocalist because he has the ability to change his voice! Hahaha. He knows how to entertain! And he was always marching! Hahaha. XD

:music: 3 Hours & 10 (University of the Visayas) – Good performance! The band deserved the slot for the finals. Yep, they’re one of the three finalists from the Visayas! And they’re from Cebu! Wuhoo! :kyaa3:

:music: Burning Day Light (Siliman University) – The vocalist moves like Bamboo. Hehehe. :P

:music: Sundae Special (Iloilo Doctors College) – Female vocalist, who was also the guitarist. I liked her voice! She sounds like Gwen Stefani. And they also made it to the finals! Yeba! :peace:

:music: Wazabee (University of Negros Occidental Recoletos) – Headbanging female vocalist! I can’t hear her voice at some parts of the song at first, but it became audible later. :nyahihihi:

:music: Lady Suzette (AMA Computer College – Tacloban Campus) – Female vocalist. She looks a bit like Nina. And their music is different from the likes of Paramore and Hey Monday. Nice performance! They completed the list of finalists from the Visayas! Weee! :wink3:

:music: Obis (Carlos Hilado Memorial State College) – They have a female keyboardist. Ahehehe. The vocalist could hit the high notes, too! It amazes me ‘coz I only know a few males who could do it successfully. Hehehe. :yes2:

After the undisputed battle of the college bands, Letter Day Story, the champion of NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2008, had their performance. :crown: And indeed, I can say they really deserved the title! Superb show! The vocalist looks like Diether Ocampo at quick glance. Hehehe. :sweatdrop:

Letter Day Story :notes: (Thanks to Sinjin for this pic.)

After that, the much-awaited 6cyclemind had their turn! I love them na! Hahaha. :lovestruck2: The vocalist looks a bit like Timoy (CBS) and more like RR (my crush in school before). Nyahahaha. Their performance was really great and very lively! I really had fun even though we were just on our seats the whole time! Hahaha. :oo:

6cyclemind :notes:

The event ended with a bang! ;p We had the chance to interview the three finalists (3 Hours & 10, Sundae Special, and Lady Suzette), Ms. Yayin Bangcoro, and Letter Day Story. :) Sayang we weren’t able to interview 6cyclemind. We presumed they were already very tired. Hehehe. Anyway, videos and notes of the interviews will be posted soon. :notepad:

For me, NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2009 is one of the best events we have attended so far! Aw I think the others would agree with me about this. :kyaa4: Aside from the fact that we were able to interact with some respected people, the event gave us the opportunity to practice and improve our media skills. Hail oh CBS! Nyahahaha!  :peace:

Freebies! This is Clado‘s pic. But we basically got the same things. So, yeah.

Sweet! I can’t wait to see some videos. Do you have recordings of some of the bands playing? I’d love to hear them. :D
We have some people at my school who are in bands, but they’re all emo-screamo bands…and they kinda suck. :sweatdrop:
