On My Way to Career Formation
I don’t know what has gotten into me, but I suddenly felt like taking time to think about my career in the future. I know I’m a late bloomer. I just realized how much I’ve been missing on the things I’m supposed to already know by now. Well, not really in all aspects, though. I believe I have enough knowledge of certain things like computer and the internet. But one thing that I think I still lack knowledge in is the field of Industrial Engineering — the course that I’m currently taking up in college. Though I’ve had good grades in my major (and minor) subjects, or at least not failing marks, I don’t think I’ve internalized some important things that much. I regret that sometimes, I just study for the sake of not failing an exam. I didn’t take those things very seriously. But don’t get me wrong. I still have learned several things. Exams and experiences have shaped my mind already. Anyway, maybe the reason for this is that Industrial Engineering was not really my first choice for a course. I wanted to take up a computer course — Computer Science, Information Technology, or Computer Engineering. But I chose Industrial Engineering because of the job opportunities. I was kind of enticed at that moment.
I have already mentioned to my friends, and even to my teacher, that computer-related stuff is where my heart is at. It’s already in my system ever since I was young. I even came to a point where I almost regretted not following my heart in the first place. But along the way, I learned to love Industrial Engineering. I could already appreciate its applications in the real world. It started with Methods Engineering (major subject). That stopped me from getting disappointed.
So instead of wasting my time thinking about how my life could have been if I took up a computer course, or filling my time with almost-regrets, I started thinking about my future that’s in line with what I’m currently taking up. I approached my teacher, and since our topic beforehand (in the classroom) was already about jobs IE’s could land on, I took the chance of asking her what might be a good choice for me. Since she already knows that I love computers (anything that has something to do with it), she thinks I would like being a systems analyst. She gave me an overview of the work of a systems analyst, and I liked the sound of it. She told me that Industrial Engineering and Computer Science is a good combination because understanding the systems in Industrial Engineering would help in planning and creating software that could be used to meet an organization’s business requirements. That would still be totally IE with a touch of CS. So, obviously, after I graduate, I have to proceed to a second course (CS, in this case), or some corporate learning programs. I’m actually taking it into consideration. Who knows, I might really feel the urge soon to pursue this career. Now I think I already have a goal. Thanks, Mrs. Dakay, for the suggestion!
I just need one more thing: an idol in the same field (i.e., an Industrial Engineer) — someone I could look up to and be my inspiration/motivation to strive and go for the goal. I just don’t think I could do without one. I’m easily swayed when I don’t have something or someone to give me a push. But if I really can’t find one, I think I’ll have to start making myself my own inspiration. I just hope that would do, though.

Mikyu, let’s not be too hasty in setting up our future. You’re still young. It’s good though that you’re thinking of it but one must always think of everyday experiences and lessons. It’s not what we’ve learned in college that will shape us it’s the experience.
I am into Tech stuff too and working in a BPO Industry under a Financial vertical is not even near to what I’ve dreamt of but I took it all with sincerity.
I know you’ll do good once you’re out in the comforts of the school. We’ll be here to help you. Just walk out with heads high.
Cheers!

Yep, I’m aware that experience really is the best teacher. I’m just trying to make up for lost times ‘coz I know I’ve been kinda lax with school stuff. We can’t deny naman that it really is gonna be useful when we get out there. I’m also just trying to find some motivation and direction.
Thanks sa support, Beej! Let’s all meet one another soon in the corporate world!

Hi Mik! Karon lang ko naka comment ani na post nimo… Hehehe… Well, as an IE practitioner I’d say learn as much as you can while you are still in school. Learn a lot… not only IE stuffs but as well as those that really interest you. Acquiring non-IE skills can really give us an advantage when we will be working in a business firm. The extra skills will add market value among us. Thus, employers will be so much interested for us to be part of their organization. I remember when I had my final interview in Coca-Cola… the panel interviewers asked me a lot of questions about my extra curricular stuffs right after they have asked about my experiences in terms of application of most IE stuffs and principles. And they have commented that they love to hire talented IEs. Hehehe.. So just keep learning. But beware… basin dili na ka afford ang mga potential employers sa imohang market value. Goodluck nila. Cheers!!!
